International Dance Day is an annual movement organised by the International Theatre Institute that aims to encourages people to embrace dance as a fun way to promote your health and wellbeing as well as raising awareness on dance across the world - bridging cultural, political and language barriers by bringing people together through the medium of dance.

What are the benefits of Dancing?

Most people are aware of dance as a performing art on stage, but dancing can also be a social activity, a form of physical fitness, or a prime means of expressing cultural heritage and identity. Dancing promotes confidence, self-esteem, personal expression and flexibility of the body and mind.

When did dancing begin?

First archeological proof of dance comes from the 9-thousand-year-old cave paintings in India. One of the earliest uses of structured dance was introduced in religious ceremonies that told the stories of ancient myths and gods; Egyptian priests used this kind of visual storytelling in their rituals.

How many dance genres are there in the world?

There are 28 different types of dances from around the world. There are three main roles of dance in society today and they are Ceremonial Dance, Dance for Recreation and Artistic Expression.

What can I do to support National Dance Day?

  1. Take a dance class! Get your body moving and attend a local dance class, whether you have danced before or not try learning a new skill.
