T Levels were introduced in 2020 and offer a more technical way of learning than A Levels, allowing students to develop specific knowledge and skills required in the industry.

They do this by offering a mix of classroom-based learning and the chance to learn workplace skills in the subject you are studying. That is because every T Level includes 45 days (315 hours) in an industry placement.

What are the benefits of hosting an Industry Placement?

There are multiple benefits of hosting an industry placement, including:

  • Attracting motivated young people to your business, bringing imaginative and new ideas.
  • Addressing local and national skills gaps by helping young people develop the skills your industry needs.
  • Gaining additional labour at little or no cost to support your productivity.
  • Building partnerships with local training and education providers, improving the recruitment pipeline of your business.
  • Saving on recruitment costs by providing the opportunity to see what the young person can offer, on a no obligation basis.

How Does North Kent College Support Employers during the placement?

If you do choose to take on students as part of a T Level, you will be given plenty of support by us:

  • Our students are given pre-employment training sessions to prepare them for the workplace and develop their employability skills.
  • You will have a dedicated co-ordinator throughout the duration of the 315 hours (45 days).
  • We set learning goals (SMART) for the student to work towards and monitor their progress at each review meeting.
  • We plan and co-ordinate the selection process, to track the student’s progress and support you throughout to make it as straight forward as possible and mutually beneficial.

What Does an Employer Need to Provide?

Taking on students as part of a T Level is not that different from taking on any new member of staff, we suggest employers:

  • Allocate staff time to support and supervise the student.
  • Provide a safe space for the student to work with the necessary equipment and PPE clothing.
  • Provide your Employer’s Liability Insurance Certificate to the college and a risk assessment.
  • Notify your insurance provider about the placement.
  • Inform us on the structure and content of the placement to ensure that the student gets maximum value from the experience.

We work with many companies on T Levels including, Willmott Dixon, BAM, ISG Construction Ltd, Port of London Authority, Gravesham Borough Council and more.

The feedback has been hugely positive and many of our students remain with their placement provider after completing their T Level.
