The purpose of BTEC Higher Nationals in Engineering is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals who are able to meet the demands of employers in the rapidly evolving engineering sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications also aim to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them.

The Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering offers students a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning, while allowing for the acquisition of some sector-specific skills and experience through the specialist units in each pathway, with the opportunity to pursue a particular interest through the appropriate selection of optional units.

Programme contents Requirement of 4 compulsory units, plus an additional 4 units to a total of 120 credits in total, decided by NK College subject to needs of students participating on the programme.

BTEC HNC Diploma’s are QCF Level 4 qualifications designed to provide highly specialist work-related skills needed in Engineering. The BTEC Higher Nationals in Engineering have been developed to focus on the education and training of engineers/technicians who are employed at a professional level in a variety of types of technical work, such as in systems design, manufacture, maintenance and technical services areas of the mechanical, electronic and electrical engineering industries. The qualification also allows progression to HND and Degree level programmes.

To achieve the award a PASS in subjects to a total accumulation of at least 120 Credit points must be obtained.

The offer of either running the General or Electrical Electronic Engineering programme is subject to consultation and the needs of the majority of enrolled students.

    • Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Engineering

    GCSE Grade 4 or above in Science & GCSE Maths & English Grade 4 & above

    Students over 21: If you do not have the above UCAS for GCSE requirements but have appropriate experience, specific knowledge or industry-based qualifications, your application will be welcomed & still considered.

    All students must bring a reference from their employer to interview

    The qualification also allows progression to HND and Degree level programmes, and provides preparation for a range of technical and management careers in mechanical, electronic and electrical engineering.

  • How will I be assessed?

    A combination of assignment based coursework, practical assessments together with closed book and controlled assessments are used for each course. These include performance analysis, individual oral presentations, meeting assignment deadlines, problem based coursework and through portfolios consisting of reflective, evidence based competence.
