A North Kent College student has showcased her motor vehicle talents to win a regional skills competition.

Brooke Gavin (pictured above), who is studying for a Level 3 Light Motor Vehicle Mechanics Apprenticeship, was the overall winner in the KFE4Skills Automotive competition that took place in Dover on Thursday (13 June).

The event saw students from East Kent College, MidKent College and North Kent College pitted against each other in four practical tests.

Competitors had to first carry out a full braking system inspection and adjustment, before doing a diagnosis of abnormal tyre wear in round two. The third round saw competitors having to diagnose a misfire, before, in the final round, they had to identify the cause of a flat battery.

At the end of the day the judging panel chose Brooke as the winner, with fellow North Kent College student Toby Skinner coming third.

Nikki Franks, Assistant Principal – Construction and Engineering, said: “It was a pleasure and a privilege to witness all of the learners involved in this competition from every college. Every single competitor behaved with focus and maturity. However, it gives me great pride to see two of our learners win first and third place, respectively.

Brooke Gavin, who took first place was praised by all judges for her methodical and thorough approach and Toby Skinner who came third is only in his first year of his apprenticeship, which is an outstanding achievement. Well done to all competitors and congratulations to Brooke and Toby.“
