A group of North Kent College students experienced university life firsthand recently during a taster day at the University of Greenwich.
The Travel and Tourism and Events and Hospitality students from the College’s Dartford campus visited the University’s riverside campus, which sits on a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for an introduction to university life, a campus tour, and two industry-standard workshops led by university lecturers.
During the tour, students explored the university’s impressive facilities, including the stunning Painted Hall and Old Royal Naval Chapel, with their intricate murals and frescos. After a short break for lunch, the group took part in two workshops designed to challenge their problem-solving skills and encourage creative thinking.
For these tasks the North Kent College (NKC) students were joined by a group of students from West Thames College, and the NKC students impressed Travel and Tourism lecturer, Graham Moore, who said: “I was really pleased with the way that NKC students participated, led and eventually came out winners in a task designed to make them think outside the box and look at profitability and budgeting.
“We returned to College with a much better understanding of what to expect at University and the students seemed determined to find out more about life and courses in Higher Education.”
The students themselves shared their enthusiasm for the experience, with Daisy Gee saying: "I thought that today was a fantastic opportunity to view the University, and I really enjoyed the activities which we participated in”, whilst Jessica Snow added: “I had a great experience at Greenwich University. Everyone seemed lovely and welcoming, and I enjoyed the group activities”.
North Kent College offers a range of qualifications for young people aged 16 and over and for adult learners, including Level 1, 2 and 3 qualifications, T Levels, Apprenticeships and Access to Higher Education Courses.
