Policing Level 3 student Lewis Gilbert is the first of the force’s cadets to be honoured in this way and joins young people from the other uniformed forces who were selected in recognition of their duty and devotion to the community.
Alongside his studies at North Kent College, Lewis has been part of the Swanley cadets for four years. He set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in his community at the age of 13, which he still runs and has used his first aid qualification to help members of the public on several occasions. Lewis also received a Chief Officer’s Certificate of Merit for the help he provided to an elderly man after he had a fall.
Each year the four different Cadet organisations in Kent appoint a Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet. Those appointed may accompany the Lord-Lieutenant on Parades and carry out other duties. They provide an essential link between the armed forces and the local community, assist with recruiting within the cadet forces and assist the county's Reserve Forces and Cadets Association.
After receiving this award, Lewis will now assist the Lord Lieutenant of Kent, the Lady Colgrain, in her duties which will include attending parades alongside her. Lewis plans to finish his qualification here at North Kent College, travel the world and ultimately join the Kent Police as a police officer and start his career.
Lewis Gilbert said “Being awarded as the Lord Lieutenant's Cadet for Kent Police has shown me that if you put in all the hard work and stay determined with the career that you want then anything is possible in life, make sure to stay positive and enjoy every moment.”
Cadet Scheme Assistant Manager Anne-Marie Moore said, “In his time as a cadet, Lewis has consistently demonstrated extraordinary levels of commitment, service and integrity, he has never faltered in his dedication to service. I am delighted he has been recognised in this way, very well deserved.”
