Budding chefs at North Kent College’s Gravesend campus expanded their culinary repertoire with a masterclass from a visiting cook.
Amy Shepard who runs Gillingham based company Vegan Delights came in to give students an insight into her vegan bakery business and educated them on vegan baking during a workshop.
Students produced a range of delicious carrot and lemon vegan cakes and added a selection of vegan ingredients to give them an extra creative touch.
Michelle Wildish, Chef and Hospitality Lecturer at North Kent College, said: “Amy gave the students a great insight into vegan baking that they can take with them into the industry to help cater for the ever growing demand.”
Amy was quick to praise the students work, saying: “It was amazing to work with such polite lovely students, and great to see the variety of ideas from everyone based off one recipe. Thank you for having me.”
Xander Jepson who is studying for an Advanced Chef Diploma, added: “Being a vegan myself, it was great to work with these ingredients and create such tasty and wholesome cakes.”
North Kent College runs a number of Hospitality and Catering courses at its Tonbridge and Gravesend campuses.
Students benefit from first class facilities that include industry standard kitchens and service areas, and staff are all specialists with first-hand experience of working within the industry.
Students also get first-hand experience of working in the sector thanks to two fully functioning restaurants: The View at the Tonbridge Campus and The Gallery at the Gravesend Campus.
Both restaurants are open to the public and staffed by all levels of our catering academy students, with trainee chefs preparing and cooking the food and front of house students learning the intricacies of the perfect service all supervised by the experienced and professional catering team.
