Hospitality and Catering students and tutors were invited to a special upskill day titled ‘The Secrets of Japanese Food and Ingredients’ on the 14th June 2022.
The event involved 36 students and 20 lecturers from 12 colleges including North Kent College. The students had the opportunity to meet and watch brilliant chefs including Benoit Blin, Chef Akemi and Adam Smith, create unique and exciting Japanese dishes.
The aim of the session was to explore all about where, why, and how they created their brilliant dishes and to tap into their imagination. In addition to the world-class chefs the students were able to hear from Steve Munkley, Vice President of the Craft Guild of Chefs, who discussed the importance of taste and texture alongside potential career paths and future roles for students.
Additionally, students were able to enter the kitchen and were provided with all the recipes to cook after the event. This was to make sure students continue to learn and grow in the hospitality industry, picking up new skills every day.
Andrew Barker, Lecturer in Hospitality and Catering, exclaimed “This was an amazing experience for our learners in particular and all the students around the country who attended so much culinary talent in one room showcasing the finest of Japanese cuisine”.
Mark Poynton, Chef / Patron at MJP Restaurant, said “It has been an honour to have been involved in ‘A Passion to Inspire’ for the past 12 years and always a pleasure to help, support and inspire the next generation – this has been a very special event and our most Inspirational day ever!”
