In October, fashion students from our Tonbridge campus had the opportunity to visit an exclusive preview titled ‘Body Beautiful-Diversity on the Catwalk’. The exhibition was curated by Georgina Ripley and the exhibition focused on embracing diversity and body positivity in the fashion industry.

The Amelia Scott is an integrated service facility housing a range of arts, heritage, culture and well-being services. The building houses both The Amelia services and Kent Adult Education services. Visitors to The Amelia are able to explore exciting temporary exhibitions, discover the fascinating history of Tunbridge Wells and much more. The building is named after Amelia Scott, a social reformer and campaigner for women's suffrage, who lived and worked in Tunbridge Wells.

The exhibition opening at The Amelia Scott examines how today’s fashion industry is challenging perceptions and championing alternative ideals of beauty on the catwalk, in advertising, editorial, and behind the camera. The first exhibition of its kind in the world, Body Beautiful: Diversity on the Catwalk looks at how fashion creatives are embracing inclusivity and body positivity by exploring five key themes: size; gender; age; race, and disability.

Produced by National Museums Scotland, The Amelia is the final venue on the tour, our Tonbridge fashion students were extremely lucky to have the final opportunity to see the exhibition! Students saw pivotal garments from designers including Max Mara, Ferragamo, Ashish, Vivienne Westwood, Pam Hogg, and more. They also had the privilege of hearing a talk from curator Georgina Ripley followed by a Q and A.

Willow Verney, Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion and Textiles said, ‘I really enjoyed the event it has inspired me. I'm happy to see that these issues are being confronted and that the fashion industry is making changes that support and celebrate all types of people.’
